What normally happens after a mass extinction?

I think it has something to do with some species increasing in population. Not sure, though. Thanks!

It radically changes the course of biological evolution and in general sets life back.

Explanation:

Extinction events tend to kill millions or billions of individual organism and significantly reduce diversity. However, life usually bounces back as new ecological niches are opened up. Those species who were able to survive the extinction tend to fill these niches and thrive.
