Explanation:

The play had Premiered in New York in 1858 and had been mounted a few times in the years immediately afterward. It remained popular in the later part of the century perhaps because of its notoriety.

Booth timed his shot to coincide with a funny bit in the play hoping the laughter would cover the sound. The play was interrupted when Booth leaped from President's box to the stage. The play did not restart.
