According to chemiosmotic hypothesis,a proton gradient is created between perimembranous space and matrix of mitochondria.These free protons are then transported through ATPase proteins as the inner membrane is impermeable for cations.
This movement causes conformational changes in the ATPase resulting in production of energy which is stored in the form of ATP
