A direct exam of the tissues is best.

Explanation:

The tests usually begin with some sort of reason that rises suspicion. A sputum test, which examines coughing-induced phlegm for abnormal cells, often is first.

These often lead to X-rays, (PET) scans, CT scans, or MRI scans of the chest.

Biopsy is next if an abnormal spot is seen. That examines cells from a tissue sample. This is the best way to say what is what.

Bronchoscopy or mediastinoscopy is often used to retrieve tissue.

The pathologist will next give a diagnosis and if it is cancer, he will also give the type and stage.

The next step, in the case of cancer. is to see an oncologist.
