Monera was recognised as a kingdom first by Copeland. The kingdom included all prokaryotic organisms. Monera remained a part of 5 kingdom system introduced by Whittaker (1969).
Explanation:
Later Carl Woese floated an idea of three domain system of classification in biology. He decided to divide cellular forms of life in three domains: Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya (all eukaryotic organisms).
This automatically divided the prokaryotic group Monera in Archaea and Bacteria.
- Archaea is most ancient evolutionary group which includes prokaryotic organisms living generally in extreme environments.
- Bacteria is a diversified prokaryotic group with some advanced features.
After this recommendations put forward by Carl Woese, biologists often recognise a 6 kingdom classification system:
Archaea
Bacteria
Protista
Mycota(Fungi)
Plantae
Animalia.
