What type of blood cell has proteins on it that determines blood type?

Blood type or blood group is determined by presence of specific molecules on cell membrane of Red Blood Cells (RBCs). These molecules are considered to be antigenic.


Molecules responsible for blood type in human are not always proteins; these could also be carbohydrates or glycoproteins, etc. Accordingly different blood group systems are recognised in human.

Most common type blood group ABO is differentiated on the basis of oligosaccharide molecules present on RBC membrane while Rh blood group is distinguished due to presence or absence of a particular type of protein on RBC membrane.
