A divergent boundary such as a mid ocean ridge.

Explanation:

A mid ocean ridge is thought to be a location where the convection currents in the mantle bring fresh magma to the surface. This fresh lava if it reaches the surface causes volcanos like those seen in Iceland.

As the magma reaches the surface of the midAtlantic ridge the magma is pushed apart. The magma on either side of the ridge are of the same age, as the two sections came to the surface at the same time. This can be seen in alternative belts of magnetic direction in the basaltic ocean crust on the either side of the mid ocean ridge.

divergent boundaries like those of the rift valley in Africa cause the formation of massive volcanic mountains like Mount Kenya, and Mount Kilamanjaro.

Divergent boundaries cause earthquakes, shield volcanos, island formation and mid ocean ridges.
