Hematomas are caused by an injury to the wall of a blood vessel, prompting blood to steep out of the blood vessel into the surrounding tissue.
Explanation:
Trauma is the most common cause of a hematoma.
Other conditions that may cause a hematoma include aneurysm, medications like anticoagulants, and diseases or conditions that may decrease the platelet count in the blood stream.
Hematomas may also be caused due to orthopaedic conditions like pelvic bone fractures. Fingernail injuries, bumps, passing blood clots, blood clots in the legs (DVT), blood cancers or excessive use of alcohol may also lead to damage in blood vessels and blood seepage from capillaries resulting in hematomas.
