MIR (Peace, in Russian) was an old space station orbiting the Earth between 1986 and 2001. Owned by the Soviet Union and then Russia, the MIR was the first modular space station and was assembled in orbit between 1986 and 1996.

When complete, the station consisted of seven pressurized modules and several unpressurised components. Power was provided by several photovoltaic panels connected directly to the modules. The station was kept in an orbit between 296 km and 421 km altitude and travelling at an average speed of 27,700 kilometres per hour, completing 15.7 orbits per day.
