I'm not quite sure on Mughal rule so I will talk about British rule in India:

Western ideas came flooding in and India became "civilized". However, people like Gandhi criticized their use of the word "civilization", suggesting the natives were uncivilized. India became urbanized.

Because at the time Europe was gaining power, everybody who wasn't European was racially inferior. And so, people in India were defined by their race and given less respect.

There was an Indian revolution: India has Islamic and Hindu religions and in those religions, pigs were considered dirty and cows, sacred. Basically, they were offended by the British's introduction of these animal's fats, and so there was a rebellion.

Opportunities include getting a Western-style education and that lead to greater roles in the community and making your way up in status.
