The most common version of this is a man having multiple wives. This arrangement is accepted and legal in some countries. There are occasionally traditional limits to the number of wives a man may have.
The marriage agreement is legally a contract and it is subject to laws.
The arrangement is illegal in many countries and there has been a number of court cases even recently in North America on this practice. The most common justification is on religious grounds.
The Mormons ceased to authorize the practice in 1890 with a total ban in 1904. Various breakaway sects continued to practice this and it exists even today. Before 1890 approximately 20% of Mormons in the US were polygamous.
