Reagan sold weapons to Iran though they had been enemies since 1979(with the hostage crisis and the overthrowing of the Shah regime) in order to finance the contras who fought against a socialist regime in Nicaragua. Indeed Congress had voted against financing the Contras. Colonel North was prosecuted but Reagan denied any involvement. It was the biggest scandal that occurred during his presidency. Israel participated by transporting the weapons to Iran. The 1986 midterm elections proved a disaster for Republicans as they had been hit by such a scandal.
