What was the main purpose of German air raids over London during the war?

1 Answer

The main purpose was to force the British to surrender.

Explanation:

The Germans had planed an invasion of England code named operation sea lion.

For the invasion to be successful the Germans had to neutralize the British air force so the transports carrying the invasion troops could safely cross the English Channel. The Battle of Britain was the German attempt to destroy the Royal Air Force.

The use of radar enabled the smaller British air force to successfully repeal the German attacks. Perhaps if the Germans had continued attacking the Royal air force the Germans might have won, as the Royal Air Force was holding on by a thread. But the Germans shifted their attack.

The Germans started attacking London instead of the air force. The German high command felt that the British would surrender if their capital was destroyed from the air. The Germans even attack the spiritual capital of England Coventry which had no military value hoping the dispirited population would sue for peace.

The terror campaign did not work. Under the leadership of Winston Churchill the British would not surrender.
