The Onin War is a civil war which broke out in Japan in 1467.

Explanation:

In the 15th century, the power of Muromachi Shogunate was weakening. This is because the Daimyoes were given the economic authority as well as the military and police power.

After Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th Muromachi shogun, retired from politics, his succession issue was a great concern, since his first son had died young before.

Yoshimasa decided to abdicate the general position to his brother, Ashikaga Yoshimi, and his gurdian was Hosokawa Katsumoto.
However, Yoshimasa's wife, Hino tomiko, desired her second son, Ashikaga Yoshihisa, to be the shogun. His gurdian was Yamana Sozen.

The Onin War was the conflict between the Hosokawa and Yamana. It broke out in 1467 and lasted until the cease-fire arbitration was agreed in 1477. Ashikaga Yoshihisa became the 9th shogun after the war.
