What was the role of African American soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War?

They were treated very badly since they were given the most fastidious tasks.


Black soldiers were used for the heaviest work, digging trenches, hauling logs and ammunition, digging wells for white regiments. White privates received $13 a month a month; Negro privates revceived $10 a month
