Prime Minister for part of the war.

Explanation:

At the outbreak of war Neville Chamberlain was Prime Minister. However he was discredited with the policy of appeasement which had clearly failed. In 1940 he was replaced as PM by Churchill who had been his sternest critic.

Churchill was seen as the rallying point for opposition to Nazism as Britain stood alone in 1940. He remained as PM until after VE day in May 1945. However he was defeated in a landslide victory for Labour and it was Clement Attlee who was PM on VJ day in August 1945, when the war finally ended.
