When magnesium ions form compounds with bromide ions, how many magnesium ion(s) are needed to form a neutral compound?

Jan 20, 2017

Well magnesium forms a $M {g}^{2 +}$ ion...........

Explanation:

and bromine forms a $B {r}^{-}$ ion...........

And so, if these ions are to make music together, and form a NEUTRAL ionic solid, we need 2 equiv of anion, and 1 equiv of metal ion:

$M {g}^{2 +} + 2 B {r}^{-} \rightarrow M g B {r}_{2} \downarrow$

All I have done here is to conserve mass and charge. Are they conserved?
