Cuba.

Explanation:

Castro led a successful revolution against the corrupt US backed regime of Batista and set up a socialist government.

The Americans responded by isolating Cuba totally which forced Castro to turn to other options. The Soviet Union was only too willing to help.

The Americans also supported a disastrous attempt at an invasion at The Bay of Pigs. Backed by both the Kennedy administration and CIA a group of Cuban emigres landed but were quickly killed or captured.

The Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 when the Soviets began deploying missiles on Cuba almost led to a nuclear war. However the Soviets backed down.

It took until this year before an American President visited Cuba since Castro took power and started easing trade restrictions.
