Towards the end of the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era and at the start of the Cenozoic Era, around 65 million years ago, the continents were beginning to develop a recognisable shape.

India had separated from Gondwana some 180 million years ago, and by this time it was still on its northward collision course with the Eurasian continent.
