They are completely different things. A pyramidal age structure diagram is a mapping of demographics to look for trends in a population. "Zero Population Growth" is a calculable balance between births and deaths in a population.
The first is used for observation and study of past trends and current states. The second is a theoretical value that may be used for some projections, but it does not have anything to do with a real population condition.
In general the pyramidal age structure will be most useful for most environmental studies.
