Danzig was placed at the end of a "corridor" given to Poland after WWI to ensure it had a connection to the sea and also to divide Germany from its northern and traditionally "military-proud" region of Prussia.
This situation and the refusal of the Polish government to allow the crossing of this area allegedly led to the German aggression of Poland of 1939 that started the war.
