The Krebs cycle starts with pyruvate, which is turned into acetyl CoA.

Why is the answer to this question pyruvate then, as both pyruvate and Acetyl-CoA appear?

The reason for this is that glycolysis, and the entire process of sugar metabolism, can stop at pyruvate. This happens in the absence of oxygen.
