American forces were officially segregated during World War 2 but there were manpower shortages in combat units particularly in Infantry units. Mixtures of white and black units did occur because of combat conditions and there were pilot programs to integrate some units. Numbers of Black Officers increased during the War.

One of the arguments for segregation was that whites and blacks won't fight well together. It was found that, in combat, troops were happy to get the help no matter what skin color they were.

This war experience was overall positive. The Army accepted integration after the war.
