The Maurya empire was the biggest.

It was the earliest and biggest empire,to be established by an Indian dynasty .It was ruled by the Mauryan dynasty from 321 to 185 B.C.E. It began in 250 B.C.E.

It emerged as a result of a combination of states in the northern India that created one state, thus expanding to approximately 5,00,0,000 square kilometers.

The Empire was founded in 322 BC by Chandragupta Maurya(fully occupied the northwester India by 320 B.C.E.). He then started to expanded his power westwards across central and western India taking advantage of the disruptions of local powers in the wake of the withdrawal westward by Alexander the Great's Greek and Persian armies.

It developed during the time of the rise of Alexander the Great. The policies and laws of the empire were formulated by chanakya ministers, which led to the empire to thrive.

Asoka was well-known embracing and reestablishing Buddhism after the conquest of Kalinga(now Odisha).
