These two emerging powers in the Mediterranean were bound to clash for supremacy. The early Punic wars fought in Italy saw significant victors for the Carthaginians under Hannibal at battles such as Lake Trasimene and particularly at Cannae in 216 BC, where possibly as much as 100,000 Roman soldiers were killed in a single day.

Hannibal however did not take Rome and was recalled to Carthage. The eventual outcome was the defeat of the Carthaginians at Zama in 202 BC and the emergence of Rome as the greatest power in the Mediterranean..
