Mao led up to 200,000 supporters during the Long March to escape the Nationalist forces. When it ended several thousand miles later 90% had died or been killed as a result of constant harassment.

However the communists regrouped and after another 12 years of civil war and fighting the Japanese They prevailed and Mao declared the People's Republic of China on October 1st 1949.
