Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States.

Explanation:

He played a large part in the civil war. He helped preserve the Union and passed the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery.

He did four important things for the Civil War.

  1. He distributed $2 million for war material
  2. He called 75,000 volunteers into military service
  3. He suspended the writ of habeas corpus (arresting suspected Confederate sympathizers without a warrant)
  4. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863

It was Lincoln who later caused the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
