Explanation:

The Kuomintang were the Chinese Nationalists under Chiang Kai Shek who controlled China throughout the pre war period. They fought the Japanese after the invasion of Manchuria and the communists under Mao.

In 1949 they were defeated and fled to Formosa, now Taiwan. This became Nationalist China and was recognised as official China by the West until the 1970's as opposed to the communist mainland.
