This was revolutionary as there were previously no other all-African American air squadrons in the USAAF (United States Army Air Force). There were two squadrons: the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group. The 332nd flew over 200 bomber-escort missions and the 477th was responsible for destroying over 1,400 enemy targets. The two earned a total of 865 combat medals and distinctions.
