Explanation:

The Geneva Peace Conference in 1954 which partitioned Vietnam failed to provide a permanent solution. By the early 60's the Vietcong were fighting the corrupt government of Diem which was backed by the USA.
Diem was assassinated in 1963 and replaced by the military, but this failed to stop the communist advance. As a consequence the Americans escalated their military commitment to over 500,000 ground troops. The Vietcong were therefore fighting the ARVN, the Americans and their allies which included Australian troops.
