Originally the members of a communist organization founded, in the early ‘40s, by Ho Chi Minh to fight against the Japanese and (possibly) the French with the aim to gain the independence for Vietnam.

Explanation:

The organization aimed to free Vietnam from foreign rulers and, at the time of its start, it faced the French as colonialists rulers and subsequently (due to the connivance of the Vichy regime with the Germans, allied of the Japanese) of the Japanese forces that occupied military most of the country.

At the end of the war, having liberated vast areas of the north from Japanese occupation, the Viet Minh declared independence occupying Hanoi and starting a (successful) war against the French that were trying to regain their position as rulers in Vietnam.
At the end the Viet Minh won a fundamental victory over the French during the Battle of Dien Bien Phu under the command of general Vo Nguyen Giap.
