Why are telescopes placed on mountains?

To make effective use of the Telescope.

Explanation:

Two major Limitations for ground based Telescopes no matter how big they are, are Light pollution and the blurring of the Earth's atmosphere. Because Mountains are far away from Urban areas there is no Light pollution, so the Sky is very much clear also at higher altitudes the air is also clear, these are a few reasons why Mountains are chosen for telescopes.
