Why can water pass easily through sandstone but not through shale?

Shale is not Permeable Yes.

Explanation:

Porosity is the tiny spaces in rocks which hold the oil or gas.Permeability is the allowance of rock to something mainly fluid to pass through it. sandstone is both porous and permeable but Shale as compared to it is porous but possess extremely low characteristic of permeability .
