Explanation:

In most laboratories, ethanol (in the form of industrial methylated spirit) is copiously used to clean and rinse glassware. Not only is it fit for purpose, it smells nice, and is not hard on your hands. Most of the rinsings go down the drain...ethanol is completely miscible with water...and should not cause too much of a problem.

This being said, you have to follow the procedure laid down by your institution, WHATEVER they are. It is no use to argue the toss with a regulation or a technician with a bee in his bonnet.
