Why did farmers who had small plots of land sometimes work on plantations?

Plantations could provide wages. Plantations are usually devoted to a single commercial crop: Cotton, Coffee etc that was exported for cash payment.
Explanation:
Small farmers had trouble generating cash for consumer goods. Commercial crops grown on plantations could generate cash.
A small farm could provide food for the family to live on. But cash was not always available.
