Why did it seem that communism was no longer a threat to China after the Long March?

Because of enormous communist losses.

At the beginning of the Long March, there were an estimated 200,000 communists taking part. By the end some estimates put the estimate as low as 6,000 due to constant harassment by the Kuomintang nationalists and appalling hardship. These figures reflect a view that the communists would no longer be a threat.
