Why did tensions develop between Great Britain and China in the mid-19th century?

British traders wanted access to Chinese goods, which were greatly desired by Europe, but China would only accept Silver bullion in trade. Traders wanted to be able to trade goods for goods.

Explanation:

Preferably something that the traders had a lot of and was cheap, like opium from India. If they could get the valuable silks, porcelain and lacquer ware from China and pay with cheap, easily transported, nearby Indian Opium they could make big money. The Opium Wars were the result, followed by the Unequal Treaties.
