Why did the Sepoy Mutiny begin?

The Muslim and Hindu soldiers that were representing the British suspected that the guns used cartridge that contained pig fat and/or beef fat. The soldiers had to use their teeth to bite open the cartridge, essentially. Because the Muslims could not consume pork fat and the Hindu could not consume either, both rebelled against the British because they felt that the British did not respect their religious beliefs in making them bite cartridge with animal fats. There are other reasons, as well, as tensions against British rule had been growing for some time, but the animal fats was a sort of tipping point
