A comet's tail is directed by the solar wind.

A comet is basically a dirty snowball. When it gets close to the sun volatile materials evaporate.

The sun is constantly emitting streams of particle which are known as the solar wind.

The solar wind pushes the gases around the comet away from the sun which forms the comet's tail.
