Why don't the planets orbit the sun in perfect circles?

It has to do with the uneven formation of the planets some 5 - 6 billion years ago.

Explanation:

Although no planet orbits in a perfect circle, most planets orbit in a slightly elliptical orbit, only slightly out of round. Mercury is the exception as it has a highly elliptical orbit.
