Why have people stopped using semicolons, especially in online writing? Is it because the general population doesn't know what they mean or is there some other reason? Are semicolons on their way to the punctuation graveyard?

I personally think that people do not know how to use semi-colons. I think that instead of using a variety of sentences structures, we stick to what we know and use commas and conjunctions. I think that professional writers are probably the most frequent users of semi-colons.
