Why is abiogenesis considered to be distinct from evolution?

Because they are.

Explanation:

A theory is an idea that has both been proven beyond doubt and not disproven once, but also has explanatory and predictive powers.
It is NOT synonymous with supposition, hypothesis, conjecture, supposition or assumption.

Abiogenesis is an idea that attempts to explain how life came to be from non-biologic origins. So far it is just a hypothesis as we have found no way to test it yet.

Evolution, like gravity, is a theory and it deals solely with what happens to life as it adapts to its ever changing environment. Once life is present, evolution kicks in, but it does not deal with the hows or whys that life appeared, but just with how it changes as time goes by.
