Population growth occurs when the rate of births (survived) exceeds the rate of deaths (mortality)
Explanation:
As long as the available resources are able to support a particular population size, it will tend to increase. This may be because natural selectivity for survival of a species would tend to produce an "excess" of births to overcome the infant mortality. When infant mortality decreases, the overall population will increase faster.
