Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizing agent. When released in the bloodstream, it can oxidize some of the cells, destroying the normal structure of membranes and may lead to cellular injury. This is called as oxidative stress, and therefore it is harmful to us.

However, hydrogen peroxide also oxidizes bacterial cells and may contribute to how white blood cells kill foreign organisms that a person ingested, inhaled, or otherwise obtained.
