Suppose you have 10 regular bulbs (each 50 Watts). You need 500 Watts when all is on.

Now suppose you buy energy efficient bulbs (each 20 Watts). You need 200 Watts when you operate all of them at once.

Think about the old bulbs and new bulbs do the same task. You do not complain on new bulbs since they are as efficient as the old ones (in terms of light of course).

Think your country has a population (or family) of 10 million and every single person (or family) uses the same system (meaning that there are total 100 million bulbs in your country and each one consumes 50 Watts continually). And further your country has a population growth rate of 0.01. The next year your population will be 10 million 100 thousands. Now let me compute the total energy need for this country at the beginning and one year later:

10 million * 10 bulbs * 50 Watts = 5 billion Watts
10.1 million * 10 bulbs * 50 Watts = 5.05 billion Watts (one year later).
