The plants need solar energy to produce glucose and energy molecules necessary for life.

Explanation:

The chloroplast on plants absorb solar energy. The absorbed solar energy is used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. The Hydrogen is then recombined with Oxygen in special cell structures that use the energy released to change ADP into ATP the energy molecule of the cell.

The ATP is used to change Carbon Dioxide into the Carbohydrate glucose, in the Kreb's cycle. This involved process is called photosynthesis. Photo refers to the light or solar energy which is essential to synthesis or making of glucose and other energy molecules.
