The Mayflower Compact was a precursor and model of American Democracy.

Explanation:

The people of the Mayflower decided together what form of government would rule their colony. The power to rule came from the people and God. The people under God determined what form of government they would live under. These rights did not come from the King, parliament , or other higher powers of man.

demo = the people.

cracy = rule

so democracy means rule by the people.

The Mayflower compact was the first colony to have a government determined by the people. This concept of rights coming from God directly to the people is echoed in the Declaration of Independence.
