Sound waves cannot travel in the absence of a carrier medium - gas,liquid or solid. The propagation magnitude diminishes as the density of the medium increases and the pressure decreases..

The audio waves are encoded in digital form for communications. No medium is required for this purpose. In the reverse process, the digital form is decoded back to sound waves.
