# Why we can say Ionic hydrides are used as dehydrating agents??

Aug 4, 2017

The hydride that is commonly used is calcium hydride.......$C a {H}_{2}$, which is a dry powder, and fairly cheap, and reacts with water according to the following equation......
$C a {H}_{2} \left(s\right) + 2 {H}_{2} O \left(l\right) \stackrel{C {H}_{2} C {l}_{2}}{\rightarrow} C a {\left(O H\right)}_{2} \left(s\right) + 2 {H}_{2} \left(g\right) \uparrow$
Sodium hydride, and lithium aluminum hydride, $L i A l {H}_{4}$, can also be used in this manner; tho you do exercise caution with respect to the solvent that you want to dry.
