Vectors have two components because they represent quantity and direction. An example of a vector could be one representing velocity which is speed in a given direction divided by time.

Scalars, on the other hand, represent quantity only. A scalar example could be one representing distance traveled where direction does not matter or speed which is simply distance traveled divided by time.
